Method and sources

This estimate comes from applicants who sent LSE a TMUA score when sending one was optional. LSE has never required the TMUA for Mathematics with Data Science and lists it as recommended for 2027 entry. The curve uses the 167 applicants with a score for 2023 and 2024 entry (64 and 103), all fee statuses. It is those test-takers' own offer rates by score, on the 1.0 to 9.0 TMUA scale.

The people who sent a score did much better than everyone else: for 2024 entry, 54 of the 103 with a score (52.4%) got offers, against 33 of the 382 without one (8.6%). So the curve describes a group that chose to sit the test, and a 2027 applicant's real chance may be lower than it shows. For 2027 entry LSE still only recommends the test.

On this course the offer rate did not rise steadily with score. For 2024 entry it was 23.5% at 7.0 to 7.9 (8 of 34), against 57.1% at 6.0 to 6.9 (16 of 28) and 82.8% at 8.0 or more (24 of 29). The fitted curve smooths this into a gentle rise, so it is a rough guide. Below about 4.2 it is held at about 29%, because the lowest score was 3.9 for 2023 entry and 4.2 for 2024 entry; that value is not an estimate from data.

LSE's other courses show that TMUA scores from 2025 entry onwards are on a different footing from 2023 and 2024 scores, with averages that fell sharply. We hold no TMUA figures for this course from 2025 entry, so we cannot say how a current score lines up with the curve. Your real chance could be lower or higher than it shows, so treat the score you enter as a guide.

The score data are not split by fee status, so UK and international applicants are read from the same curve. No year could be held out to test the curve, so every range is widened by half. LSE has no grade or school fit of its own here, so the GCSE, A-level and school effects are the ones fitted for Oxford PPE. PPE's GCSE and A-level effects are measured against PPE applicants with the same score, who are unusually strong on grades, so here they are re-centred on the standard offer and used at half size: A*AA with eight or nine GCSE 8s and 9s counts as no change, as leaving grades blank does, and the range runs from no effect to PPE's full size. LSE does not interview, so there is no interview step.

This estimate cannot see your personal statement, reference or contextual data. It describes 167 applicants who chose to send a score in 2023 and 2024, so a 2027 applicant's real chance could be lower or higher, and the offer rate did not rise steadily with score. Apart from the school answer, which counts for UK applicants only, the UK and international settings give the same answer, although UK applicants got offers three times as often as others in 2023. LSE has told people who asked for past figures that they will not offer any insight on an individual application. The GCSE, A-level and school effects are borrowed from Oxford PPE and may not match LSE. Predicted and achieved grades are treated the same.

LSE Mathematics with Data Science admissions statistics

What the numbers LSE has released say about getting into BSc Mathematics with Data Science: how many people apply, how past TMUA test-takers fared, and how the odds differ by where you apply from and your grades. The course started in 2023. The score data come from 2023 and 2024 entry, when sending a TMUA score was optional, and the applicants who sent one got offers far more often than those who did not (52% against 9% for 2024 entry). LSE still only recommends the test for 2027 entry.

Did applicants with a TMUA score get more offers?

The TMUA has never been compulsory for Mathematics with Data Science. LSE's course pages encourage applicants to take it, and for 2027 entry LSE and the UAT-UK course list both give it as recommended, not required.

About 1 applicant in 5 sent a score: 64 of 367 (17.4%) for 2023 entry and 103 of 485 (21.2%) for 2024 entry.

They got offers 54.7% and 52.4% of the time, against 7.9% and 8.6% for applicants without a score, and took 59% and 62% of all offers.

What TMUA score do you need for LSE Mathematics with Data Science?

A TMUA score of about 4.5 reaches a 1 in 3 chance of an offer on the fitted curve, though few test-takers scored that low.

LSE publishes no pass mark, and the TMUA is recommended, not required.

The curve below is fitted to the offer rates of the 167 test-takers for 2023 and 2024 entry, when a score was optional. They got offers far more often than other applicants, so the real chance for a 2027 applicant may be lower.

The fitted curve passes 1 in 3 at about 4.5, but that is where the data run out: only 7 test-takers scored below 5.0 across both years, and three quarters scored 6.6 or more. The curve says very little about scores this low.

Scores have run lower since 2025 on LSE's other courses, and we hold none for this one, so the direction is not known. Your real chance could be lower or higher than the curve shows.

Which LSE courses require or recommend the TMUA is in our LSE TMUA guide.

Estimated chance of an offer by TMUA score, from past test-takers

The fitted curve rises gently, from 37% at 5.0 to 41% at 6.0, 50% at 7.0, 58% at 8.0 and 75% at 9.0. The offer rates did not rise steadily like that.

For 2024 entry, 82.8% of test-takers scoring 8.0 or more got offers (24 of 29), but only 23.5% at 7.0 to 7.9 (8 of 34), against 57.1% at 6.0 to 6.9 (16 of 28). For 2023 entry it was 7 of 7 at 8.0 or more, 14 of 30 at 7.0 to 7.9 and 11 of 21 at 6.0 to 6.9.

Offer holders and rejected test-takers had almost the same middle score: 7.2 and 7.0 for 2023 entry, and 7.25 and 7.2 for 2024 entry. Among test-takers, the score alone did not separate offers from rejections.

Few test-takers scored low: the lowest score was 3.9 for 2023 entry and 4.2 for 2024 entry. Below about 4.2 the curve is held at about 29%; that figure is not an estimate from data, and with a score that low your real chance is not known.

Do GCSEs, A-levels and Further Maths matter?

LSE's standard offer for Mathematics with Data Science is A*AA with an A* in Mathematics. Where your school offers it, LSE expects AS- or A-level Further Maths at grade A, and an A* in Further Maths with an A in Maths is an accepted alternative.

IB: 39 points with 766 at Higher Level and a 7 in Mathematics: analysis and approaches.

GCSE English Language and Mathematics at grade 6 or higher are the minimum. The contextual offer is A*AB with an A* in Mathematics for 2027 entry.

For 2023 entry, 20 of 37 UK applicants predicted A*A*A* got offers (54.1%), against fewer than 5 of 14 predicted A*AA, the standard offer.

LSE made 8 contextual offers of the 59 for 2023 entry.

The figures we hold for this course do not split offers by Further Maths. The calculator's GCSE and A-level effects are borrowed from Oxford PPE.

Questions about LSE Mathematics with Data Science admissions

What is the acceptance rate for LSE Mathematics with Data Science?

About 17.5% of applicants got an offer for 2025 entry: 111 offers from 634 applications, or about 1 in 6. The 21 to 1 on LSE's course page counts applications for each of the 30 students who started.

Is the TMUA compulsory for LSE Mathematics with Data Science?

No. LSE encourages it and, for 2027 entry, lists it as recommended but not mandatory, as it has for every year from 2023 entry. Most offers still went to applicants with a score: 54 of the 87 for 2024 entry (62.1%).

What TMUA score do I need for LSE Mathematics with Data Science?

LSE sets no pass mark. Our fitted curve passes 1 in 3 at about 4.5, but only 7 test-takers scored below 5.0 and three quarters scored 6.6 or more, so the curve says very little about scores that low. It comes from 2023 and 2024, when a score was optional, so treat it as a rough guide.

Does a higher TMUA score always improve my chances on this course?

Not in the data. For 2024 entry, 82.8% of test-takers scoring 8.0 or more got offers, but only 23.5% at 7.0 to 7.9, against 57.1% at 6.0 to 6.9. The groups are small, so read these figures with care.

Why might my real chance differ from the calculator?

The calculator uses applicants who chose to send a score. For 2024 entry they got offers 52.4% of the time, against 8.6% of applicants without one. A 2027 applicant's real chance at a given score may be lower. Scores have run lower on LSE's other courses since 2025, and we hold none for this one, so your real chance could be lower or higher than the calculator shows.

Do I need Further Maths for LSE Mathematics with Data Science?

LSE expects AS- or A-level Further Maths at grade A where your school offers it. An A* in Further Maths with an A in Maths is also accepted. The figures we hold for this course do not show how offers differ by Further Maths.

Does LSE interview for Mathematics with Data Science?

No. LSE does not interview for any of its degrees. It decides from your UCAS application, which covers predicted grades, subjects, personal statement, reference and contextual data, plus the TMUA where you send one.
