Second, the two "Social and Political Studies" entries plus the dual degree route are easy to conflate at a glance; they're separate UCAS entries with separate requirements pages, so check the one that matches your actual application rather than assuming they're identical.
Third, Robotics and Artificial Intelligence is offered as an MEng only among UCL's TARA-requiring courses, which fits its position as a specialised engineering route rather than a general Computer Science degree.

Why UCL uses TARA for engineering and social sciences alike
This is the part of UCL's approach that's easy to miss if you only skim the course list, and it's worth sitting with for a moment, because it changes how you should think about preparing.
Oxford's seven TARA courses — Economics and Management, History and Economics, History and Politics, Human Sciences, Philosophy Politics and Economics, Psychology (Experimental), and Philosophy Politics and Linguistics — all sit within humanities and social sciences.
There's no engineering course on Oxford's list, and no standalone Computer Science degree either. UCL's list looks nothing like that.
It puts Computer Science, Computer Science & Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, and Robotics and Artificial Intelligence through the same test as Sociology, Social Sciences, and the Social and Political Studies routes.

Neither module is actually about essay-writing or about advanced mathematics specifically.
Both are about a kind of general reasoning under time pressure that shows up, in different proportions, in every one of UCL's eleven listed courses: a Robotics and Artificial Intelligence student needs to evaluate the soundness of a design justification just as much as a Sociology student needs to read a policy report critically, and a Management Science student needs to work through quantitative data just as much as a Computer Science student does.

What that means practically is worth spelling out, because it cuts against the instinct a lot of applicants have.

If you're applying to a technical course
Don't assume TARA is "the humanities test" and treat Critical Thinking as an afterthought — it's scored and reported on exactly the same basis as Problem Solving.
A-level Maths, Further Maths, or Computing gives you a real head start on Problem Solving's numerical reasoning, but the argument-analysis skills in Critical Thinking (spotting an assumption, judging whether new evidence strengthens or weakens a case) usually need dedicated practice, since they're not what those subjects typically assess.
Robotics and Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science & Mathematics applicants in particular are often strong at structured problem-solving but less used to reading a short prose passage and diagnosing exactly where its logic breaks.
If you're applying to a social science course
Essay subjects at A-level (History, English, Politics, Sociology) build genuine argument- evaluation instincts, which transfer well to Critical Thinking.
The Problem Solving maths appendix only covers GCSE-level content — fractions, place value, percentages, averages, and reading data from graphs and tables — but if you dropped maths after GCSE, that content can feel rustier than it should under a 40-minute clock.
Sociology, Social Sciences, and the Social and Political Studies routes are exactly the kind of courses where it's tempting to assume the maths module doesn't matter much. It's scored and reported separately, and universities can see both numbers.
Management Science sits in an interesting middle position: it draws candidates from both directions, some arriving with strong quantitative backgrounds and some arriving with strong essay-based backgrounds, which is arguably the clearest illustration of why UCL would want a test that scores both kinds of reasoning independently rather than assuming one type of applicant profile.

Mechanical Engineering: UCL's newest addition

UCL's own course page describes the TARA requirement for Mechanical Engineering as a new requirement, which points to this being a recent addition to the list rather than a long-standing one.
If you're applying to Mechanical Engineering specifically, that has two practical implications.
First, don't assume last year's advice from an older sibling, a teacher, or a forum thread about UCL's Mechanical Engineering admissions still applies — TARA may not have featured in it at all.
Second, because it's newly added, there's less accumulated applicant experience circulating about how the department actually uses the score in practice, which is exactly the kind of thing worth checking directly with UCL's own tests, tasks and interviews page or the department's own published guidance rather than assuming it mirrors an older, more established course on the list.

UCL doesn't work that way:
UCL applicants can sit TARA in either the October 2026 sitting or the January 2027 sitting.
What that flexibility means in practice depends on why you'd want to use it.
Sitting in October means you get the test out of the way earlier, well clear of mock exams and the bulk of coursework deadlines for most students, and you'll have your result back well before the UCAS January deadline for most courses.
Sitting in January instead gives you more preparation time — useful if you want another term to work through practice material, or if October clashes badly with other commitments — though it does mean sitting TARA much closer to, or after, the main UCAS deadline for many courses, so it's essential to check your specific course's UCAS deadline and confirm with UCL admissions that a January sitting will actually arrive in time to be considered for your application.

Registration windows. The general registration windows found for UCL's two sittings are 20 July–21 September 2026 for the October sitting, and 26 October–21 December 2026 for the January sitting.
There's a wrinkle worth flagging honestly:
Oxford's own booking deadline (for its separate, October-only sitting) is published directly on ox.ac.uk as 28 September 2026, which sits awkwardly close to, but doesn't exactly match, the 21 September figure found for UCL's October registration window.

Rather than asserting one deadline as definitive, the honest position is: use these windows to plan roughly when to register, and confirm the exact live deadline for UCL specifically, for your application year, at the point you actually book — deadlines like this are exactly the sort of detail that gets updated centrally and can shift slightly from one cycle to the next.
How UCL likely uses your TARA score
UCL hasn't published an exact formula for how a TARA score combines with the rest of an application, and it would be overreaching to claim otherwise.
What follows is a reasonable, hedged reading of how it's likely to work, not a confirmed policy — treat it as informed inference rather than fact, and check your specific department's admissions page for anything more concrete.
The pattern that fits both how UCL frames TARA on its admissions pages and how Oxford has historically described the equivalent TSA score is that it functions as one input among several, rather than a standalone cutoff or a simple pass/fail hurdle.
Predicted and achieved grades, the personal statement, and (for some of these courses) interview performance all still matter, and TARA appears designed to add information those other elements can't easily capture: how you reason under time pressure, on material that isn't drawn from your specific A-level syllabus, compared directly against every other applicant on a shared scale.

What counts as a good score
TARA scores Critical Thinking and Problem Solving separately, on a scale from 1.0 to 9.0 in one decimal place, capped at those endpoints.
UAT-UK has stated directly that the scale is designed so a typical candidate scores around 4.5, and that roughly the top 10% of candidates score above 7.0.
That gives you a rough anchor: a score meaningfully above 4.5 puts you above the typical candidate, and anything above 7.0 sits in genuinely rare territory on either module.
Because the two modules are scored and reported independently, it's entirely normal to be stronger on one than the other — and, as covered above, which one that is often correlates loosely with your academic background rather than with anything fixed about you.
A Mechanical Engineering applicant scoring strongly on Problem Solving but only around average on Critical Thinking, or a Sociology applicant showing the reverse pattern, is a common shape, not a warning sign.
