TARA score conversion: what your mark is actually worth
What raw mark gets you a 7.0, what counts as a good TARA score, and whether it matters that the person next to you sat a different paper. Built from the scoring data UAT-UK published in July 2026.

TARA scoring: the short answer
Your TARA result is two numbers, one for Critical Thinking and one for Problem Solving, each between 1.0 and 9.0.
There is no total, no pass mark, and no official conversion table that turns your raw mark out of 22 into one of those numbers.
That last one is not the universities being secretive. It is because you and the person sitting next to you did not take the same paper.
UAT-UK say "forms" where most people would say papers. A form is one version of the exam paper, and we will use the everyday wording from here.
Several versions run across the testing window so that people can sit on different days. Some versions land slightly harder than others, so 14 out of 22 on one paper is not the same achievement as 14 on another.
Your mark is converted afterwards to account for that, which is why nobody can hand you a single fixed table.

TARA score conversion table: what raw mark gets what score
Here is the thing almost nobody mentions. A TARA score conversion table does exist.
UAT-UK build one every year.
In their words, once the testing window closes "the item difficulties are used to generate a raw score to theta (or ability) table", and that ability figure becomes your 1.0 to 9.0 score.
The catch is that there is one of those tables for every version of every paper, in every sitting. Each is built after you have already sat the test, and none of them are ever published.
So the question is not whether a conversion exists. It is that yours is calculated privately, afterwards, for a paper only some candidates sat.
Which leaves the honest version below: the same table built three times, because your mark is worth more on a hard paper than an easy one, and nobody outside the exam board knows which one you had.

Find your mock mark on the left and read across.
A raw 16 out of 22 is a 5.6 if the paper was gentle, a 6.7 if it was average, and a 7.7 if it was hard. That is the difference between a middling score and a top-10% one, on exactly the same performance.
Which is why any TARA score calculator you find online is running an estimate much like this one, whether it says so or not.
The real conversion for your paper is never released, so a tool that hands you one confident decimal is hiding a guess, not avoiding one.
The one conversion figure that does hold up
Whichever column you were in, the gaps between the rows stay the same. Moving up the table always costs about the same number of marks.
Roughly two extra marks is worth one scaled point.
That is the genuinely useful takeaway, because it turns your practice scores into something meaningful. Four marks better than last week is about two points.
The half of the conversion UAT-UK do publish
Once the October results are in, two points on the scale are fixed by decision rather than measured. The middle candidate is placed at 4.5, and the candidate at the top 10% mark is placed at 7.0.
A straight line is then drawn between those two points, and UAT-UK publish its numbers.
Here's how that breaks down:

So why can you not just use that on your mock mark?
Because "ability" is not your mark out of 22. Getting from one to the other needs the private table built for the exact paper you sat, and that is the half nobody publishes.
You have the second half of the map and not the first.
What is a good TARA score?
Two anchors are set deliberately every year, so you can rely on them.
The middle candidate is placed at 4.5, and the candidate at the top 10% mark is placed at 7.0. Those are not measurements of how hard the test turned out to be.
They are decisions, applied to whoever turns up.
Which means "aim for 7.0" is really "aim to finish in the top tenth of everyone sitting it".
The TARA score distribution for 2026 entry
Here is where people actually landed in the first TARA year, across 2,626 candidates.

Worth noticing, because it contradicts advice you will see repeated everywhere: across the whole year the middle score on Critical Thinking was 4.0, not 4.5.
The 4.5 figure is fixed to the October group specifically. Everyone else is measured against them.
One thing this cannot tell you is what your course wants, because no university publishes a required TARA score. Oxford and UCL both use it alongside grades, your personal statement and, for most courses, an interview.

Why your two TARA scores are not comparable
Most people look at their two numbers and read the gap between them as a statement about their own strengths.
Some of that gap is just the scale. The two modules are scored separately, and UAT-UK state plainly that "the scaled scores are not comparable across modules".
Look again at the distribution above and compare the columns.
At every level, a Problem Solving score sits 0.3 to 0.7 points higher than a Critical Thinking score for the same rank.
So a 5.4 in Critical Thinking and a 5.8 in Problem Solving are not a weakness and a strength. They are two identical results, both in the top quarter, printed on two rulers that happen to start in different places.
Is it fair if you got a harder paper?
This is the question that actually worries people, usually about ten minutes after they walk out and discover a friend had different questions.
The short answer is yes, it is fair, and correcting for this is the single thing the whole scoring system exists to do.
Here is the process end to end, and none of it happens on the day you sit the test.

Because the table at stage three is built for your paper specifically, a 14 on a harder version converts to a higher score than a 14 on an easier one.
So drawing the hard paper does not cost you, and drawing the easy one does not help.
One detail worth getting right, because it is widely misunderstood: it is your total that gets converted, not which particular questions you got right.
Two people who sat the same paper and both scored 14 get the same result, even if they got a completely different 14. The adjustment happens between papers, not between questions on yours.
There is a price for all this, and you have already paid it.
None of the calculation can start until everybody has finished, which is why no score appears on screen when you click submit.
One thing worth knowing if you are sitting more than one admissions test:
UAT-UK score the TMUA and ESAT the same way, with the same 1.0 to 9.0 scale and the same conversion built after the window closes.
Would you get the same TARA score if you sat it again?
Probably not exactly, and it is worth knowing by roughly how much before you spend a week agonising over a decimal place.
Every test has some luck in it. Whether the questions happened to suit you, whether you misread one, whether you were rushing by question 20.
With only 22 questions per module, one or two of those going differently moves your score more than you would expect.
UAT-UK measure this rather than ignore it. They publish a figure for how much a score can wobble, and for TARA it works out at about one point on the 1.0 to 9.0 scale.
Translated into something usable: if you sat an equivalent paper again tomorrow, your score would probably land within a point of what you got, and would almost certainly land within two.

The decimal still counts, even though it is not a reliable measurement.
Universities get your score exactly as calculated, to one decimal place, and nothing stops an admissions team preferring a 6.3 to a 6.0 when they are separating hundreds of similar applicants.
So do not read any of this as permission to relax about small gaps. A 6.0 and a 6.3 are not a real difference in ability, and they can still be a real difference in outcome.
Which is an argument for aiming past your target, not at it. You cannot control which end of that one-point band you land on, so the only protection is to be far enough clear that a bad day still puts you where you need to be.
And it tells you what to work on. Chasing a couple of marks is chasing noise.
Moving five or six marks shifts you a full point or more, which is the kind of gap no amount of wobble hides.
UAT-UK are open about the cause. Their own consistency measure for TARA came out between 0.59 and 0.79, against a usual benchmark of 0.80.
They put that down to each module being only 22 questions long, note that anything above 0.70 is satisfactory at that length, and treat the single 0.59 as an outlier from one January paper sat by just 263 candidates.
They expect the figures to improve as more people take the test.
Problem Solving is the harder module
Both modules give you 40 minutes for 22 questions. They do not feel the same in the room, and the data backs that up.

The median Problem Solving time was exactly 40:00. Half of all candidates used every second and were still going when the clock stopped.
Across both modules, more than 85% of candidates used between 35 and 40 minutes.

Read the second column twice. 28% of candidates either never reached a Problem Solving question or spent under five seconds on one.
Five seconds is not enough to read one of these questions, let alone do the three or four steps it takes to answer it. Those are guesses.
On Critical Thinking the same figure was 4%. So more than a quarter of candidates left at least one Problem Solving question never genuinely attempted, against one in twenty-five on Critical Thinking.
One candidate never reached twelve of the 22, which is over half the paper.
UAT-UK are not hiding from this. The report says the test is expected to be "slightly speeded", meaning that for many candidates the limit on their score is how fast they work rather than what they can do.
Our read on why Problem Solving bites harder, and this is our inference rather than UAT-UK's: a Critical Thinking question can often be rescued by rereading the argument more carefully.
A Problem Solving question needs a calculation you either work through or you do not, so there is no fast path when you are behind.
What to do about it:
Aim for 1 minute 49 seconds per question. That is 40 minutes across 22, and the data says the average candidate finishes with no slack at all.
Never leave anything blank. There is no negative marking, so a guess is always worth more than an empty box.
Practice this module against a clock. Untimed accuracy tells you nothing about what happens at minute 38, which is where a quarter of people got into trouble.

Past papers, mock marks and what they tell you
You have probably already gone looking for TARA past papers, and the reason you found none is the same reason there is no conversion table.
It is not only that the test is one year old.
Questions get reused. UAT-UK describe keeping questions on a common difficulty scale across years precisely so they can build comparable papers each year.
A question that is going to turn up in a future paper cannot be published. And since several versions circulate at the same time, releasing any one paper would compromise the others still in use.
So there is no TARA paper waiting to be released, which changes what you should be practicing on.
What your mock marks are actually telling you
You scored 14 out of 22 on a practice paper. What is that worth?
Not a scaled score, and nobody can turn it into one, because the conversion belongs to a real paper sat by a real year group.
What a mock mark is genuinely good for is your own trend, as long as you remember that a two-mark movement is noise and a five-mark movement is real.
UAT-UK publish a free archive of BMAT Section 1 papers from 2003 to 2023 and TSA Section 1 papers from 2008 to 2023, which is a good place to start.
But BMAT Section 1 changed in 2020, dropping from 35 questions to 32 and losing its data analysis content. The older critical thinking papers are missing question types TARA does test and include types it does not.

Should you sit TARA in October or January?
For most people this is decided for you, so check first. Oxford only uses the October sitting, while UCL applicants can choose.

If you do have a choice, here is the one piece of real evidence, and it is thinner than you might hope.

In the first TARA year the January group scored lower on Critical Thinking, with the average falling from 4.46 to 4.06. Problem Solving barely moved.
The scale did not shift to compensate, because the same conversion is used for both sittings within a year. So that difference is real: the January group genuinely did worse on that module.
It is tempting to read that as "January is easier to stand out in", and we would not push it that far.
It describes one year group of 2,626 candidates, in a cycle where Cambridge was not using TARA and everyone could pick their sitting.
With Oxford now sending ten courses through the October date, the make-up of both sittings will look completely different.
Sit when your course requires, and when you will actually be ready.
Who scores higher, and what UAT-UK do about it
The technical report spends most of its length on how different groups performed, and it would be selective to quote its scoring data and skip this.
In their summary: male candidates outperformed female candidates on both modules, with a wider gap on Problem Solving. Candidates from higher socioeconomic backgrounds scored higher on average.
Candidates who gave English as their first language did better on Critical Thinking, which the report puts down to that module's heavier reading load. The difference was much smaller on Problem Solving.
UAT-UK describe these as patterns consistent with national trends rather than something the test creates, and they run a separate statistical check for question bias wherever the groups were large enough to analyse.
That check found no Critical Thinking questions showing bias, and one Problem Solving question flagged for review.
None of this predicts anything about you as an individual.
Results, resits and who sees your score
Nothing is calculated on the day, so there is no point refreshing anything the same evening. The report states plainly that "candidates do not receive an immediate score", because the whole testing window has to close first.
Universities receive your two scores and no total.
They also receive your Writing Task as text rather than a mark, and whether your course uses it at all is a separate question that only two of the sixteen TARA courses have answered. We go through all sixteen in does the TARA Writing Task actually matter.
One constraint to know before you book: you can only sit TARA once per admissions cycle. There is no resit, and no second attempt to average against.

What raw mark do I need for a 7.0?
Somewhere between 15 and 18 out of 22, depending on how hard your paper was.
That range is not us being unhelpful. It is the honest width, because UAT-UK have never published the mark the middle candidate scored on any paper. Our TARA score conversion table shows all three scenarios.
Is there an official TARA score conversion table?
UAT-UK build one for every version of every paper, after the testing window closes. None of them are ever published.
So there is no single conversion table, and there cannot be, because candidates on different days sat different papers with different conversions.
Is there a TARA score calculator?
Not an official one, and any calculator you find is estimating rather than converting.
It has to assume how difficult your paper was, because that figure is never released. Ours shows all three assumptions side by side instead of picking one and presenting it as fact.
Is there a TARA mark scheme?
In the simple sense, yes: each module is 22 multiple-choice questions, one mark per correct answer, and there is no negative marking, so a wrong answer costs you nothing a blank would not.
What does not exist is the second half, the published table turning that total into your 1.0 to 9.0 score. That part is calculated privately for each paper.
Are there TARA grade boundaries?
No. UAT-UK do not publish grade boundaries or a pass mark for TARA.
A boundary is a line drawn across a raw mark, which only works if everyone sat the same paper.
What is a good TARA score?
4.5 puts you in the middle of the year group and 7.0 puts you in roughly the top 10%, because those two points are fixed there deliberately.
No university publishes a required score, so treat those as landmarks rather than targets.
What is the average TARA score?
It depends which group you mean, which is why you see different figures quoted.
For 2026 entry the October median was 4.5 on both modules, because 4.5 is fixed to the October median by design. Across both sittings combined the real medians were 4.0 for Critical Thinking and 4.7 for Problem Solving.
My friend said their paper was easier. Did they get an advantage?
No. Your total is converted using a table built for the exact version of the paper you sat, so a 14 on a harder paper converts to a higher score than a 14 on an easier one.
Correcting for exactly this is the reason results are not available the moment you finish.
Are my two scores added together?
No. There is no total, and universities see both numbers separately.
You also cannot compare them to each other. A Problem Solving score tends to run a few tenths higher than a Critical Thinking score at the same rank.
Is a TARA score accurate?
It is accurate enough to rank candidates, which is what it is for, but it is not precise to a decimal place.
Sit an equivalent paper again and your score would probably move by up to a point in either direction, mostly because 22 questions is a short test.
That is not a reason to shrug at small gaps. Universities see your exact score to one decimal place and can rank on it, so aim comfortably past the level you want rather than exactly at it.
Can I resit TARA?
Not within the same admissions cycle. You get one sitting.
Why do results take so long?
Because the scoring cannot start until every candidate has finished, so that every question can be rated for difficulty against the whole year group.
