TARA test results explained: what your score really means

Most explanations of TARA scoring stop at the scale itself:
1.0 at the low end, 9.0 at the high end, one decimal place. That's true, but it's not where the useful information is.
UAT-UK's own TARA page — the official test administrator, and the single best source for how the module structure, timing and scoring scale actually work — goes a little further than the scale alone, and it's worth stating those specific points precisely, because they're the only two data points in this whole area that are actually confirmed by the source rather than inferred from a chart.

First: the scale is designed so that a typical candidate scores around 4.5. Second: roughly the top 10% of candidates score above 7.0.
Both scores are capped at both ends — nobody is reported below 1.0 or above 9.0, however their raw performance would otherwise translate. That's the complete set of concrete, sourced figures UAT-UK has put in writing about where candidates land on the scale.
Everything else in this article that talks about distribution shape is a separate, more careful category of claim, and we've labelled it as such throughout.
Notice what isn't in that list: a pass mark, a percentile table, or a single combined score.
TARA doesn't publish any of those, and for the last one, that's because there isn't one number to publish — which is really the starting point for everything else in this article.
Your result is two scores, not one
Critical Thinking and Problem Solving are separately timed 40-minute, 22-question modules, and they are scored and reported completely separately, each on its own 1.0-to-9.0 scale.
There is no combined or averaged figure that folds the two into a single headline number.
When a university receives your TARA result, what actually lands on their desk is a pair of figures — a Critical Thinking score and a Problem Solving score — not one composite grade.
Worth noting for context: the third module, the Writing Task, isn't reported on this 1.0–9.0 scale at all — it goes to universities as written text, not a number, which is a genuinely different kind of result from the two this article is about.
That's worth sitting with for a moment, because most candidates' instinct is to think of "my TARA score" as a single thing, the way an A-level grade or a UCAT total feels like one thing. It isn't.
Your actual profile is two independent measurements of two different skills: how well you evaluate arguments, and how well you work through structured, quantitative problems under time pressure.
They're related in the loose sense that both reward careful, unhurried reasoning, but a candidate can be considerably stronger on one than the other, and that's neither unusual nor a flaw in the test — it's the test doing what it's designed to do, which is measure two distinct things separately rather than blend them into a number that hides which one is which.

What that separation means in practice
Two practical consequences follow from Critical Thinking and Problem Solving being reported separately, and both are worth thinking through before results day rather than after it.
Here's the detail:
Courses probably don't weigh both scores the same way
UAT-UK's own materials don't publish a course-by-course weighting formula, and neither Oxford's own admissions tests page nor UCL's tests, tasks and interviews page states one exact figure for how heavily each score counts on each course — so treat this next point as a reasonable inference, not a confirmed policy. It would be unsurprising if a heavily quantitative course — Computer Science at UCL, or Mechanical Engineering, which only recently became one of UCL's TARA courses, say — leaned more on the Problem Solving figure, while a course built on argument, text and interpretation — PPE or History and Politics among Oxford's seven TARA courses, or Human Sciences — leaned more on Critical Thinking. A lopsided profile is common, and worth planning around
Because the two modules test different underlying skills — argument evaluation versus structured problem-solving — it's entirely normal to be noticeably stronger on one than the other. That's a planning problem, not a crisis: it tells you where your preparation time is actually short, rather than telling you anything is wrong. A candidate who is comfortably above what counts as a good Critical Thinking score but only around typical on what counts as a good Problem Solving score isn't "average overall" — they have one strength and one clear area to close before the test, and the two-number format is what makes that visible in the first place.
The practical takeaway is simple: look at your practice results as two separate trend lines, not one blended number.
Improvement on one doesn't tell you anything about the other, and treating them as a single average risks hiding a real gap in whichever module you happen to be worse at.

The shape of the published distributions
Beyond the two headline figures above, UAT-UK's own results guidance for the October 2025 and January 2026 sittings includes histograms showing how candidates' scores were actually distributed across the 1.0–9.0 scale, for Critical Thinking and Problem Solving separately.
Reading those charts, rather than just the two stated figures, adds real information — but it needs a clear caveat attached, so we'll say it once here and stand by it for the rest of this section: what follows is a description of the shape of those published charts, arrived at by looking at the bars, not a transcription of an exact percentage table.
UAT-UK has not published the precise underlying numbers behind each bar, so nothing below should be read as an exact percentage or an exact percentile for any specific score.
With that said, the shapes themselves are distinct enough between the two modules to be genuinely useful.
Critical Thinking's histogram clusters most heavily in the broad band between roughly 3.0 and 6.5, with two visible peaks — one around 3.0 and a second, slightly taller one around 4.5.
Problem Solving's histogram sits a little further to the right: its heaviest concentration falls in a somewhat higher band, peaking roughly between 4.5 and 5.5.
In plain terms, on this sample of two sittings, the typical Problem Solving result looks to sit a bit higher on the scale than the typical Critical Thinking result, even though both are built around the same "typical candidate around 4.5" design UAT-UK describes for the scale as a whole.
Here's what that looks like:

Do not treat any single bar as an exact figure for a specific score.

Two shape observations are defensible from that reading, and we've kept both hedged deliberately.
First, Critical Thinking's distribution looks broader and flatter across the 3.0–6.5 range, with two peaks rather than one clean bell — which suggests candidates are more spread out across that middle band than a single "typical" figure implies on its own.
Second, Problem Solving's distribution looks narrower and shifted right, with its bulk sitting closer to 4.5–5.5 — suggesting less spread in the middle of the scale, and a slightly higher typical position than Critical Thinking, even though both modules share the same overall "around 4.5 is typical" design.
Reading your own score without overclaiming
The temptation, once you have a real score in hand, is to want a single precise sentence:
"a 6.5 in Critical Thinking puts you in the Xth percentile."
We're deliberately not going to write that sentence, for either module, at any specific score value — not because it wouldn't be a satisfying thing to read, but because UAT-UK hasn't published the underlying data that would make it true rather than invented.
A bar-chart bin covering, say, 4.5 to 5.5 could plausibly represent a wide range of possible candidate counts within it, and without the exact numbers, picking a single percentile for a single decimal-point score inside that bin would be fabricating a precision the source simply doesn't offer.
What is defensible, if you keep it appropriately qualitative, is framing your score against the general shape described above rather than against an invented number.
For Critical Thinking, because the heaviest part of the published distribution sits across the 3.0–6.5 band with peaks at 3.0 and 4.5, a score anywhere in roughly that 3.0–4.5 stretch is landing among what looks like a large share of candidates — plausibly something in the region of a third to worse than half of everyone who sat the test, though that should be read as a rough band, not a confirmed figure.
A score past 6.5 is moving into the thinner right-hand tail of the chart, well before you even reach the officially-stated "top 10% above 7.0" mark.
For Problem Solving, because the distribution's centre of gravity sits a little higher — around 4.5–5.5 rather than spread across 3.0–6.5 — a score below roughly 4.0 looks, from the shape of the chart, to sit somewhat below where most candidates land on that module specifically, even though the same score would look closer to typical on Critical Thinking.
That asymmetry is really the headline finding of this whole section: the same raw number means something different depending on which module it came from, because the two published shapes aren't the same shape shifted along the same line.
If you want a genuinely precise percentile for your own result, the honest answer is that it doesn't exist yet in public form for either module, at least not beyond the two figures UAT-UK has stated directly.
Anything more specific than that is somebody's visual estimate from a chart — including, to be clear, ours.

It's worth being just as direct about the limits of this kind of analysis as about what it can add.
